Golden Apes is a German rock band from Berlin that was founded in 1998. The band name is based on a play on words, the content of which relates to Friedrich Nietzsche's Also sprach Zarathustra . The band's trademarks are melancholic, atmospheric songs and multi-layered, sometimes surreal song lyrics.

history

Golden Apes were founded in 1998 by Peer Lebrecht (vocals), Christian Lebrecht (bass) and Eric Bahrs (guitar). After first concerts with Scream Silence and Whispers in the Shadow , the band released their debut album Stigma 3.am in 2000 , which is still heavily influenced by the beginnings of dark wave / postpunk and received praise from the press and audience alike.

In 2001, drummer Nestor de Valley became a member of the Golden Apes and the result of the band's now stronger and more intense sound was the very dark and nihilistic album Thalassemia . Concerts with Clan of Xymox , The Crüxshadows and Ikon followed . After new personnel changes (live keyboardist Sven Wolff became a permanent member of the Golden Apes ), Helianthos and the War was released in 2003 , the third studio album. It became a balancing act between the experimental origins of the band and the dark melancholy of later development and has now also won over the last few critics.

The combination of catchy melodies, an atmosphere that oscillated between the singer's dark, melancholy voice, powerful guitars and elegiac soundscapes and the pictorial, surreal lyrics soon became the band's trademark, because with their fourth album Structures [The Inner Scars] ( 2004). The highlight of the following tour was the performance at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2005 in Leipzig.

In spring 2007 the band signed a record deal with the Russian label Shadowplay and released their fifth studio album The Geometry of Tempest exclusively in Eastern Europe.

Then some restructuring took place within the band. So at the end of 2008 they separated from drummer Nestor de Valley, who was replaced by Joe Finck. Keyboardist Sven Wolff left the Golden Apes in November 2009 . Ika Mamrikishuili then took the place on the synthesizers until autumn 2010.

In April 2010 the album Denying the Towers Our Words Are Falling From… was released on the Echozone label .

In 2012 the Golden Apes released their seventh studio album Riot and in 2016 their album M Ʌ LVS . The ninth album Kasbek followed in 2019.
