history

The property is first mentioned in the Domesday Book 1086. The manor house that is preserved today was built from 1578 by the Welsh nobleman Sir Edward Morgan and remained in the possession of his descendants until 1877. At the beginning of the 18th century, the entrance area and the interior were significantly rebuilt. In 1877 the industrialist Henry Pochin bought the property. Through his daughter Laura, who married the industrialist Charles McLaren , later Baron Aberconway , the property fell to the McLaren family. Laura McLaren had the interior of the house and the surrounding garden redesigned. After the Second World War, the McLaren family sold the property, which is currently used as an upscale bed and breakfast .

The Elizabethan style mansion made of exposed quarry stone is located in the middle of a 400 hectare estate. It consists of the two-storey main wing and a shorter east wing added in 1604. For Wales, the slate roof has stepped gables that are probably based on the Flemish model . The main wing has a portico with a stepped gable, the pillars on the ground floor come from the renovation around 1700.

From the interior, the wood-paneled hall with a fireplace from the early 17th century, the spacious staircase from the early 18th century and stucco ceilings in the east wing have been preserved.

The surrounding terrace garden was laid out at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, and remnants of the walled garden that was laid out in the 16th century have been preserved. On a Bronze Age grave mound are the remains of a garden house called St Elmo's Summer House .
