The golden- yellow low -grass dwarf tensioner ( Idaea aureolaria ), also known as the golden yellow Ampferspanner or golden yellow small tensioner , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioners (Geometridae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moths is 14 to 19 millimeters for females and 16 to 20 millimeters for males. The basic color of the wings is mostly light golden yellow. On the forewings there are three, on the hind wings there are two non-jagged, sharply defined, black-brown transverse lines. Because of the three transverse lines, the species was formerly known as Acidalia trilineata . The edge of the hem stands out dark, the fringes are blackish.

Caterpillar, pupa

The caterpillar is slender, gray-brown in color and has a double dark brown topline.

The piston-shaped doll is yellowish in color, the cremaster is flat and has six hooked bristles.

Similar species

Idaea luteolaria , Idaea flaveolaria and Cleta filacearia all differ from the golden-yellow skinny- grass dwarf tensioner in the less pronounced yellow color and the mostly indistinct transverse lines.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The distribution of the golden-yellow skinny-grass dwarf moth extends with some gaps from Spain and France through Central Europe to the Balkans and in the east to Siberia . The occurrence area also extends from Turkey to Central Asia . In the Central Alps it rises up to 1,500 meters, in the Asian mountains up to 2,400 meters. The species prefers warm, dry slopes, grassy heaths, bushy wastelands and grasslands .

Way of life

The moths fly mainly in June and July, sometimes a second generation appears in August and September. They are mostly diurnal, but only fly short distances when they are scared out of the vegetation. At night they also visit artificial light sources . As food plants of polyphagous caterpillars are: Yellow Dock ( Rumex ), sainfoin ( Onobrychis ) Vetch ( Securigera varia ) and hedges Vetch ( Vicia dumetorum ). The caterpillars overwinter.

Danger

The golden yellow low-grass dwarf tension is on the Red List of Endangered Species in Category 2 (endangered).
