The product contains 28 % alcohol by volume and is drunk both neat and in mixed drinks. In popular parlance , the gold crown is also simply referred to as brown because of its brownish color .

history

Goldkrone was developed in the GDR and produced in several state- owned companies from the 1970s , for example at Bärensiegel in Berlin , Nordbrand ( Nordhausen ), Schilkin ( Berlin ), Meeraner ( Meerane ) and Wilthener ( Wilthen ). The retail price for the 0.7-liter bottle was a uniform 27  marks .

After the fall of the Wall , only the Berlin Bären Siegel GmbH produced the gold crown. When Bärensiegel received a new owner around 2018, the brand was sold to the long-established Hardenberg company. Goldkrone had these produced in the traditional distillery Santa Barbara in Wilthen.

In 2011, 12.8 million bottles were sold, around 11.9 million of them in the new federal states. However, sales are falling sharply.
