Clan del Golfo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Clan del Golfo ( German  golf communities , including communities usuga , Los Urabeños or Autodefensas de Colombia Gaitanistas called ) are the most powerful criminal syndicate in Colombia . The gang emerged from right-wing paramilitaries from the demobilization . The group works with the Mexican Sinaloa cartel and is currently responsible for half of Colombia's cocaine exports.

The alleged leader of the golf clan is Gustavo Adolfo Álvarez Téllez , alias "Tavo" or "Gordo". The golf clan, made up of approx. 1,800 men (2018), uses the difficult-to-access sub-region Urabá (hence the name Los Urabeños ) in northwestern Colombia as its operational base . There, in the jungle around the Gulf of Urabá , on the impenetrable border with Panama , they largely determine public life. However, their sphere of influence extends to other departments and parts of the country, such as Antioquia , Chocó and Córdoba to the eastern Caribbean coast in La Guajira . They also pursue criminal activities in Santander , the Valle del Cauca and Norte de Santander .

The gang is first and foremost in the drug smuggling , illegal mining and extortion involved. However, the network as a whole is less of a drug cartel and more of a service provider for independent drug traffickers. They are also responsible for numerous murders and evictions. Since 2015, a special unit of the Policía Nacional de Colombia has been targeting the management level of the group around Dairo Úsuga , alias “Otoniel”, who has co- ruled the clan since 2012, under the name “Operation Agamemnon” . The security forces are intensifying their investigations and have so far killed or arrested several key leaders of the gang. A similar team hunted down drug boss Pablo Escobar in the early 1990s .

Security experts fear that after the peace treaty with the left-wing guerrilla organization FARC-EP, criminal groups such as the Gulf Clan could try to fill the power vacuum in the former Farc areas and take over the rebels' lucrative drug deals. Colombia is the largest cocaine producer in the world , ahead of Bolivia and Peru .

At the end of 2017, investigators in the Colombian armed forces succeeded in finding a 12-tonne find worth $ 360 million, which is attributed to the Gulf clan. It is the largest amount of cocaine ever withdrawn in Colombia.
