Gombe is the capital of the Nigerian state of Gombe of the same name and is located in the northeast of Nigeria. According to a calculation from 2012, the city has 198,546 inhabitants.

history

The present-day town of Gombe is preceded by an older settlement, now called Alt-Gombe or Gombe Abba, 90 km to the northwest. In 1919 the British colonial administration moved its local seat to what is now the Gombe. In 1996 Gombe became the capital of the newly founded state of Gombe.

Gombe and its surroundings form the smallest of the eleven Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Gombe with an area of ​​51.82 km². In the penultimate census in 1991, the LGA had 169,783 inhabitants and thus a population density of 3276 inhabitants per km². At the time, the city itself had 163,604 inhabitants.

The Abubakar Umar Memorial Stadium is located in Gombe .
