Gong Ji-young (born January 31, 1963 in Seoul ) is a South Korean writer.

Life

Gong Ji-young was born in Seoul in 1963 and completed a degree in English . During her master's degree, she came into conflict with the world of literature and social reality in Korea. She later processed her sympathy for fellow students and the experiences of the world of work in her literary work. Her role models were the writers Hwang Sŏgyŏng and Park No-hae , who also describe their protagonists' struggles for existence in the reality of Korea.

Her writing began with the publication of her story In the Dawn in the autumn 1988 edition of the magazine "Ch'angjak-kwa pip'yŏng". In the same year she won the "Literature Prize of the 21st Century" and the "Korean Literature Prize". By 2013 she published three anthologies of decency towards people , Dasein sheds tears , The field of stars and wrote seven novels: The most beautiful wrong ways , And their wonderful beginning , Walk alone as strong as the horn of the rhinoceros , The mackerel , The good woman , Sister Bongsun , our happy times . She also published the two collections of essays, The Soul Without a Scar and Report on a Monastery Trip .

“The reason for our struggle wasn't a silly ideology , but the contradictions in our time and social structure. Ideology can be corrected or go away, but the sincere passion one has for better human existence is by no means waning. Wasn't it from the beginning that writers and other artists wanted to carry such a burden on their backs? "

Be it in her first novels, in which she processed the experiences of her generation, or in her later works, in which she draws attention more and more to the awakening beauty of the gestures of hurt souls who share their suffering - always is Gong Ji-young's initial stance is present.

In 2005 she published the novel Our Happy Time , in which “the meaning of life and existence” is explained through encounters with a man sentenced to death and a woman who attempted suicide three times . In 2009 her novel Hexenjagd (Togani) was published, the title of which is based on Arthur Miller's play of the same name. The novel is based on an incident at a school for the deaf where several students were sexually abused by teachers and the principal. The novel and the 2011 film adaptation sparked public discussions on the subject of punishing sex offenders.
