Gong Zheng

Gong Zheng ( Chinese  龚 正 , Pinyin Gōng Zhèng ; born in March 1960 in Suzhou , Jiangsu ) is a Chinese politician who has served as Mayor of Shanghai since 2020 . Prior to that, he was the governor and deputy party leader of the Communist Party in Shandong Province .

Life

Gong Zheng was born in March 1960 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from the Beijing Institute of Foreign Trade (later renamed University of Foreign Economics and Trade ) and after graduating, worked for the Chinese Customs Administration. In 1987 he continued his studies at Golden Gate University in the United States and returned to the University of Foreign Economics and Trade, where he received an MBA in 1997 . He also enrolled at Xiamen University from 2001 to 2004 and did a PhD in economics .

Gong served as the deputy director of Tianjin Customs Department from 1993 to 1996 and director of the Shenzhen Customs Department from 2001 to 2003 . In 2003 he was appointed deputy director of the General Customs Administration.

Gong Zheng was appointed vice governor of Zhejiang Province in December 2008 and was promoted to vice governor in June 2012. In September 2013 he became head of the Communist Party of the provincial capital Hangzhou. In August 2015, Gong was appointed deputy party leader of Shandong Province, replacing Wang Junmin , who left the post due to the mandatory retirement age.

In April 2017, Gong was appointed governor of Shandong. Gong was appointed Mayor of Shanghai on March 23, 2020.
