Gonga is a British stoner rock band from Bristol formed in 1998.

history

The band was formed in 1998 by guitarist George Elgie and his brother Thomas on drums. In the following years the line-up of the bass changed several times. In 2001 Joe Volk joined the band as a singer. Then Geoff Barrow , producer of Portishead , became aware of the band and signed them to his label Invada Records . In 2003 the first, self-titled album followed, with William Smalley as bass player. After the second album II: Transmigration was released in 2008, Volk left the band to join Crippled Black Phoenixto join. As a replacement Matt Williams came briefly to the band, before he left the band after a few months to join He Is Legend . Since then the group has been active as an instrumental band, with Latch Manghat now as the bassist in the band. The album Concrescence followed in 2013 via Tonehenge Recordings .

style

According to George Elgie, the band play heavy, non- doomy instrumental rock . According to Philip Allen of louderthanwar.com, there would be a dark mood on the first two albums, so he drew comparisons to Black Sabbath and Rainbow . On Concrescence , the lack of a singer would not have a negative impact, since it would only emphasize the playing of the instruments. The drums are solemn, while the bass is thunderous. In addition, the songs are interspersed with tempo changes .
