González Island ( Spanish Isla González ) is a small island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located on the south side of the entrance to Iquique Cove , a side bay of Discovery Bay on Greenwich Island . It is connected to the even smaller neighboring island to the west by a headland that is flooded by high tide .
It was mapped and named during the 2nd Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1947–1948). Name giver is Ernesto González Navarrete, the leader of this research trip. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee translated the designation made by the Chileans into English in 1974.
