Gonzalo Aguirre

Gonzalo Aguirre Ramírez (born January 25, 1940 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan politician, lawyer and journalist. From March 1, 1990 to March 1, 1995 he served as Vice President under President Luis Alberto Lacalle .

Aguirre studied law and became a well-known constitutional law attorney. In the elections of 1984, which ended the military rule in Uruguay, he ran for his party Por la Patria for the vice-presidential candidate. However, his party lost under its presidential candidate Alberto Zumarán against the Partido Colorado with its top candidate Julio María Sanguinetti . Still, Aguirre became a senator for his party.

In 1987, Aguirre separated from his party and founded a party himself, the Renovación y Victoria . In 1988 the Renovación y Victoria formed a coalition with the Partido Nacional and Aguirre was a second candidate for the office of vice-president. In the November 1989 elections, the Partido Nacional won and Aguirre became vice-president.

In 1993 the Renovación y Victoria left the coalition, although Aguirre remained vice president. In the primaries of 1994 Aguirre supported the candidacy of his cousin Juan Andrés Ramírez , who however lost to the incumbent Lacalle, in the 1999 elections he was unsuccessful candidate for the Senate.

In the following years Aguirre withdrew from active politics, his party Renovación y Victoria practically ceased to exist after 1999. In the 2004 primaries, he supported the candidacy of Jorge Larrañaga , who eventually became a presidential candidate for the Partido Nacional, but lost the election to Tabaré Vázquez and the Frente Amplio .

Aguirre still works as a lawyer and was a famous columnist for El Pais newspaper for many years .
