Gonzalo Daniel Fernández Domínguez (born March 21, 1952 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan lawyer and politician .

Life

Fernández, a member of the Partido Socialista del Uruguay , held a mandate as deputy senator in the Cámara de Senadores for the first time in the 43rd and 44th legislative periods for the Frente Amplio from October 6, 1994 and with various interruptions . In the 45th legislative period he performed the same function again with interruptions for the alliance Partido Encuentro Progesista / Frente Amplio.

Fernández was a member of Tabaré Vázquez's cabinet in the Frente Amplio government coalition and held various functions there. At first he was Vázquez's right-hand man as his so-called Secretario de Presidencia from March 1, 2005 to March 3, 2008. Then he held the post of Foreign Minister of Uruguay . from March 3, 2008 to August 31, 2009. On the same day, he took over from José Bayardi as head of the Ministry of Defense. When the new government under José Mujica took office on March 1, 2010, he was replaced by Luis Rosadilla .

On December 18, 2011, the then 21-year-old son Fernández, Gonzalo Matías Fernández, was killed in a traffic accident in the Barrio Carrasco in Montevide .
