The Google Calendar or Google Calendar is an online service for private appointment management by the US company Google . The application was first unveiled to the public on April 13, 2006, and exited beta in July 2009. Users must have a Google account to use Google Calendar. The calendar is available both as a web version and as a mobile app for Android and iOS .

Basic functions

Google Calendar allows a user with a Google account to create and edit calendars with appointments and reminders . Other users can be invited to appointments; the invitee receives an email with a UA wg request. If he is a Google Calendar user himself, the appointment will also be entered directly in his calendar. Calendars can be shared with other users. With the Quick-Add technology, in combination with Gmail, appointment information from emails can be automatically added to the calendar. You can be reminded of appointments by e-mail and pop-up . Since the beginning of May 2007, these notifications can be set independently of the time. Similar to Gmail, the calendar is fully searchable. The calendar information is available by RSS - and iCalendar - Web feeds and as a print version. Importing calendars is possible in iCal or CSV format, export only via iCal.

history

Since July 2008, Google Calendar has also been offering the CalDAV protocol, with which appointment management programs can be synchronized without additional plugins.

First of all, an active internet connection was necessary for the calendar. Since March 2009, however, the calendar could also be used offline in conjunction with Gears . However, the appointments in offline mode could initially only be viewed but not edited. It was also only possible to insert or delete appointments with an internet connection.

In 2010, Google added the option of selecting the time zone for individual appointments. The lack of this function had previously caused criticism.

An update from August 2015 makes it possible to import appointments from Gmail and to have them updated automatically when appointments are changed to the same e-mail address.

Since December 2015, it has been possible to create reminders that enable users to save scheduled tasks. These tasks are then displayed in the calendar like regular appointments. As a cross-service feature, the reminders are also displayed in Google Inbox , Google Now and Google Notes .

In January 2016, Google added the public holidays of 54 other countries to the public holiday calendar, giving the application a total of 143 country-specific public holiday calendars. In addition, a function for the intelligent completion of appointment fields, such as addresses or contact information, was presented.

The possibility of setting goals has been available since April 2016. The calendar can integrate this into suitable time slots in the calendar. Since January 2017, this function has been expanded with the help of the Google Fit and Apple Health apps , with the aid of which data can now also be used to track the progress of certain goals.

The Google Calendar app has also supported the Apple iPad since March 2017 . Shortly afterwards it was announced that family calendars can now also be created. Several users can create appointments together, which then appear in a separate area.
