Gordon Y. Craig

¢ Gordon Younger Craig (born January 17, 1925 in Milngavie , † October 3, 2014 ) was a Scottish geologist.

Craig studied at the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh , where he received his doctorate, from 1947 lecturer and from 1967 until his retirement in 1984 professor of geology ( James Button Professor ).

He was visiting professor at the University of Colorado (1958/59), at the University of California, Los Angeles (1959, 1965), at the Australian National University (1978, as a Leverhulme Fellow), at the University of British Columbia (1977) and Texas Christian University (1994).

1967 to 1969 he was President of the Edinburgh Geological Society, whose Clough Medal he received in 1987.

He dealt with the geology of Scotland and with the history of geology. Among other things, he edited sketchbooks by James Hutton . In 1990 he received the Geological Society of America Prize for his historical work, and he was a member of the International Commission on the History of the Geological Sciences from 1984 to 1989.

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

He was married with two sons and three stepchildren. His hobbies were golf and gardening.
