The Gorew Island ( Russian Остров Горева Ostrow Gorewa ) is a small island off the coast of the East Antarctic Queen Marie Land . In the group of Haswell Islands , it lies between Buromski and Porjadin Islands .
Participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson discovered and mapped them. A new mapping and naming was carried out by scientists on a Soviet Antarctic expedition in 1956. It is named after Dmitri Semjonowitsch Girew [sic] (1888–1932), Russian dog sled driver on the Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913) under the direction of the British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott .
