Gorilla Jones

William Landon "Gorilla" Jones (* 12. May 1906 in Memphis , USA ; † 4. January 1982 in Los Angeles , USA ) was an American boxer in the middleweight division .

Professional career

In 1924 he started his professional career successfully. On January 25, 1932 he boxed against Oddone Piazza for the world championship title of the NBA (the NBA was renamed WBA in 1962 ) and won by technical knockout in round 6. In the same year Jones defended this belt with a unanimous victory on points over Young Terry and lost him to the French Marcel Thil by disqualification in the 11th round in a fight scheduled for 15 rounds.

His last fight, which he lost over 10 rounds by a unanimous judge's decision against Vern Earling, took place at the end of May in 1940 in Kellogg , Idaho , USA .

In 2009 Gorilla Jones was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
