Gorm Grimm

Gorm Grimm (* 1941 ; † September 10, 2008 ) was a German addiction medicine specialist and a controversial pioneer of substitution treatment for drug addicts in Germany. He practiced as a doctor in Kiel until 2001 .

The general practitioner, who received his doctorate from the University of Marburg in 1974, began distributing the codeine preparation Remedacen in large quantities to heroin addicts in 1975 ; substitutes such as methadone were not yet approved. In doing so, he did not violate the Narcotics Act, but had difficulties with the Medical Association, which took the position that drugs containing codeine should not be prescribed for drug withdrawal. He has been charged several times for his prescribing practice, but has never been convicted. After Grimm had to temporarily close his practice because of a stomach disease and his patients had demonstrated, the Schleswig-Holstein state government allowed the allocation of remedies as part of substitution by a specially set up outpatient clinic.

Gorm Grimm was one of the founding members of the German Society for Drug and Addiction Medicine (now the German Society for Addiction Medicine ).
