Gorteens Castle ( Irish Caisleán na nGoirtíní ) is the ruin of a low castle on private property near the village of Slieverue in County Kilkenny, Ireland near the city of Waterford .
The ruins consist of a gatehouse , which probably belonged to a larger building complex. The name “Gorteens” is an Anglicization of the Irish Gaelic “na goirtíní” (German: “small fields”). Archaeological excavations near the castle in 1993 revealed that the site was used between the 16th and 18th centuries; Further excavations in 2003 brought more castle walls and outbuildings to light.
owner
The castle originally belonged to the FitzGerald family , an Anglo-Norman dynasty in medieval Ireland. Gorteens Castle is described in the Down Survey of Ireland of 1656 as being in the Baronates of Ida , Igrim and Ibercon and in the parish of Rathpatricke . John FitzGerald , a Catholic , is recorded as the last owner of the castle from the FitzGerald family. During the Recapture of Ireland, the FitzGeralds forfeited the castle and were relegated to Connaught in December 1653 before being assigned the lands of Turlough and Carra in County Mayo in 1677 .
In 1670, Gorteen's Castle was reportedly in the hands of Samuel Skrimsheire or Skrimshaw , a Protestant . In 1700 it belonged to members of the Forstall family .
