Gottesackerkirche for the resurrection of Christ
The former Evangelical Lutheran Gottesackerkirche for the Resurrection of Christ is located in the town of Altenburg in the Altenburger Land district in Thuringia . The building is a cultural monument .
history
The Gottesackerkirche was built between 1635 and 1651 in the style of the Italian late renaissance according to the plans of the Altenburg master builder Christoph Richter. The hall church with five window axes in Corinthian order is accessed on the south side via a double flight of stairs through the main portal with portico . The sacristy is attached to the indented, five-sided choir polygon. The church closes off the cemetery laid out in 1529 to the south. The church was used as a garrison church from 1717 to 1817 and as a cemetery church until the 1970s. From 1813 to 1840 the building was derelict. The pulpit is decorated with gold elements on the ceiling of the Trinity . The organ was built by Karl Ernst Poppe from Altenburg in 1845.
Cornerstone
The mayor Johann Christoph Richter laid the foundation stone on August 28, 1638, a metal plaque with the following text is engraved in this stone:
His sincere Highness Friedrich Wilhelm II, Duke of Saxony-Altenburg, 1639–1669; Dr. Bernhard Bertram, Privy Councilor and Chancellor; as building ordinance:
Mr. Johann Christoph Richter, mayor; Mr. David Faber, Mayor; Mr. Jacob Meise, chamberlain; Mr. Ernst Böttiger, project manager.
Repairs
Renovation and repair work took place from 1835 to 1840 and 1911 to 1912. During investigations on the roof structure, dry rot was found in the wood, so renovation was urgently required. After this measure, the main roof was re-covered with slate and a new lightning protection system was installed at the same time. The renewed roof drainage was also connected to the sewer network. During the second repair, the exterior building was redesigned in the style of the High Renaissance .
graveyard
The main entrance to the church cemetery is a neo-Gothic building ensemble. In the center of the three-part complex is the chapel, a basilica without a transept. The retracted choir in the west adjoins it polygonally. The three buildings are connected by arcades.
