Gottfried Brendel (born January 15, 1913 in Coswig ; † May 6, 1965 in Dresden ) was a German civil engineer.

Life

Brendel attended the Oberrealschule in Dresden and studied civil engineering at the TH Dresden with a diploma in 1940. He then worked for several years at Dresden construction companies before returning to the university as an assistant to Friedrich Wilhelm Neuffer (chair for solid bridges, timber and foundation engineering ). In 1949 he became head of the Institute for Foundation Engineering and during this time he calculated the stability tests for the Cranzahl and Stollberg dams . In 1950/51 he received his first teaching position in reinforced concrete and in 1954 he became professor with a full teaching position in reinforced and prestressed concrete, and from 1955 also for solid bridges. In 1956 he became a professor with a chair (reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, solid bridges).

His investigation into the contributing plate width in T-cross sections made of reinforced and prestressed concrete found its way into the GDR standard TGL 0-1045 and also internationally recognized. In the Comité Européen du Béton (CEB; European Concrete Committee) he led the working group 9 T-beams . He investigated the influence of crack formation on the participating panel width in model tests.

He further developed the load-bearing method (from steel construction) for use in reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete (not only for flexible members - for this it was approved in the GDR as early as 1955, but received little attention - but for all types of load), which contributed to its versatility to show. In the GDR it was widely used via the TGL 11422.
