Gottfried Döring

Gottfried Döring (born May 9, 1801 in Pomehrendorf , West Prussia ; † June 20, 1869 in Elbing , West Prussia) was a German cantor in Elbing and the author of several works on music history.

Life

His father was an organist in the village of Pomehrendorf near Elbing. When he was thirteen, Gottfried was sent to Elbing to take lessons from the cantors Brandt and Schönfeld. After the father's death, he also had to look after the younger siblings. Gottfried Döring was a one-year volunteer soldier in Königsberg .

He probably attended the Royal Music Institute in Berlin , as he later described himself as a student of Carl Friedrich Zelter . Since 1823 he was back in Elbing. In 1826 he became a singing teacher at the grammar school and in 1828 cantor at St. Marienkirche in Elbing. In 1841 Döring was appointed Royal Music Director.
