Gottfried Ganßauge

Gottfried Ganßauge (born December 7, 1900 in Dresden , † 1988 ) was a German art historian and monument conservator .

Life

Gottfried Ganßauge was the son of the factory owner and businessman Richard Ganßauge and his wife Margarete (née Wolf). He attended the Annenrealgymnasium in Dresden, but was called up for military service from June to December 1918 as a one-year volunteer in the Saxon Field Artillery Regiment No. 12 . After graduating from high school, he began to study structural engineering at the TH Dresden in the summer semester of 1920 . In November 1922 he passed the preliminary examination, passed the final examination in December 1924 with the grade “very good” and received the engineering diploma in architecture. He then studied art history and was on 30 November 1927 at Cornelius Gurlitt with a thesis on the construction history of Pillnitz doctorate . He then worked in the preservation of monuments. Together with Walter Kramm and Wolfgang Medding, he edited the volumes for the series of art monuments inventories of the administrative district of Kassel and became head of the Kassel branch of the Hessian state curator . In 1934 he undertook excavations at the Reichenau castle ruins in Hessisch Lichtenau .
