Gottfried Lindauer
Gottfried Lindauer , also known as Bohumír Lindaur or Gottfried Lindaur (born January 5, 1839 in Pilsen , Austrian Empire , † June 13, 1926 , Woodville , New Zealand ) was a Bohemian painter who became a New Zealander in 1881. He was best known as a portrait painter for his depictions of several Māori heads in New Zealand. His pictures are partially detailed documentations of the traditional clothing of the Māori, their jewelry, weapons and the Tā moko .
Life
Lindauer was born in 1839. From 1855 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Leopold Kupelwieser and Joseph von Führich . In order not to be drafted into the Common Army , he traveled to Germany in 1873 and emigrated the following year via Hamburg to New Zealand, where he reached Wellington on August 6, 1874 .
Lindauer died in 1926 and was buried in the Gorge cemetery in Woodville .
Exhibitions
The Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin showed the exhibition Gottfried Lindauer from November 20, 2014 to April 12, 2015 . The Māori Portraits , according to the museum, the first exhibition outside of New Zealand to showcase the artist's Māori portraits. The exhibition previously required the consent of the descendants of the people shown.
