Gottfried Steinbrecher (* Easter 1662 in Lützen , † February 2, 1732 in Hirschberg , Silesia ) was a German school rector and philologist.

Life

He was a son of the blacksmith and councilor Jacob S. Despite the fact that the family had 16 children to support, this enabled the young stone crusher not only to attend school in Lützen, but also to send him to better institutions in Halle , Merseburg and Zittau . In 1686 he began studying philology , ancient languages and classical literature, as well as theology in Leipzig . He finished that in 1689 with the acquisition of the master’s degree and the right to read Kollegia. First attempting to work as a private lecturer at the University of Leipzig, Steinbrecher then switched to the school in Lützen. In 1694 he was appointed rector of the Torgau Latin School . After 18 years he accepted an offer to go to the school in Hirschberg as principal, where he arrived on September 12, 1712. Beginning with his work a few days later, he carried it out until the end of his life. Steinbrecher suffered from hypochondria , which robbed him of his calm and made his life difficult; ultimately he died of a stroke.

Steinbrecher's exemplary work gave the school, from which many good students emerged, a very good reputation. In addition, he became known for his diverse publications, including school and exercise books (Latin, French, Hebrew), school festival programs, poems and many other things.
