history

The Gottfried von Preyer'sche Children's Hospital was founded by the composer and imperial councilor Gottfried von Preyer , who died in 1901 .

The 80-bed hospital, which was built between 1910 and 1914, was run by the nuns of the “Congregation of the Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus”, while the respective Archbishop of Vienna acted as curator of the foundation.

During the First World War, the Preyer'sche Children's Hospital was attached to the Vienna Garrison Hospital and could only be used as a hospital for children after the end of the war.

Since the foundation's capital was lost during the inter-war period due to inflation , the children's hospital - to ensure its continued existence - was run as part of the Kaiser Franz Josef Hospital until 1934 and joined the Lainz Hospital from January 1935.

After the connection of Austria to the Third Reich , the Trustees was dissolved on January 18, 1939th The foundation became the property of the City of Vienna and the name was changed to “Wiener Städtisches Kinderkrankenhaus Favoriten”.

In the spring of 1945 the hospital had to be closed due to bomb damage, but was able to reopen on July 1 of the same year as the "Gottfried von Preyer'sches Children's Hospital".

The Archdiocese of Vienna , which in 1945 became the foundation's curator again, handed the hospital over to the City of Vienna in 1955. Between 1974 and 1975, the Sacred Heart Sisters had to withdraw from hospital service due to a lack of staff. Secular nursing staff took their place.

In the years after the Second World War, the Preyer'sche Children's Hospital was repeatedly expanded and rebuilt, so that a maximum of 300 beds was reached. In order to enable accompanying persons of inpatient children to spend the night in the hospital, the systemized bed number had to be reduced to 130 beds by the year 2000. By 2006, that number continued to drop to 82.

The Preyer'sche Children's Hospital fulfilled the UNESCO requirement for a child-friendly hospital environment (opportunities to play and relax, but also schooling), but compliance with the 1988 UN Charter (“Child in the Hospital”) fell due to the tense spatial situation despite the relocation the in-house pharmacy, however, difficult.
