Gottlieb Gaudlitz

Gottlieb Gaudlitz (* 17th November 1694 in Leisnig ; † 20th February 1745 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian and pastor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.

Life

Gaudlitz was born the son of Paul Gaudlitz (December 4, 1670 - March 10, 1745; butcher and citizen in Leisnig) and Anna Dorothea Dietmann.

In 1707 Gaudlitz went to Leipzig. In 1708 he was admitted to the Princely School in Grimma (today St. Augustin High School), where he studied for five years. In 1713 he moved to the University of Leipzig . On November 6, 1717, he received his master's degree in Wittenberg and continued his theological studies in Leipzig. On November 3, 1719, he became a member of the great Thursday college of preachers. In July 1721 the Leipzig council elected him catechist at St. Peter's Church . In 1726 he received a bachelor's degree in theology.

A dispute between him and Johann Sebastian Bach found its way into music history . The Thomaskantor and Director musices Bach complained to the consistory about Gaudlitz in autumn 1728 , who refused to sing unapproved songs in public services . Gaudlitz received the law from the consistory.

In 1731 he became a deacon at the Thomaskirche. In 1741 he acquired his doctorate in theology and in the same year received the pastorate in the Thomaskirche. He died in Leipzig on February 20, 1745. Superintendent Salomon Deyling delivered the funeral sermon on March 1, 1745 . He is buried in the center aisle of the St. Thomas Church.

Gaudlitz married Sophia Elisabeth on May 23, 1729 in a bridal mass in St. Nikolai in Leipzig. Her father was Dr. jur. Michael Thomasius, a member of a Leipzig family of scholars. The marriage had six children, including four girls.
