biography

After Haase learned to print, he worked in different places. In 1795 he went to Prague and worked as a typesetter in František Jeřábek's printing works. In 1798 Haase opened his own book printer business in Prague. In 1800 he married the daughter of the bookseller Widtmann. Together with his father-in-law he bought a printing company with two presses, which until 1804 operated as Haase & Widtmann . With a lot of work, Haase was able to enlarge the printing house so that it contained 18 presses and obtained the title of book printer for the estates of Bohemia . Over time, he combined book printing with a paper shop , lithography and type foundry . In 1806 Haase opened a bookstore in Prague, in 1811 a lending library and in 1815 a type foundry. In 1820 Gottlieb Haase founded the first lithographic printing company in Bohemia. From 1823 on, Haase worked again with a companion as Haase & Henning . At the beginning of 1824 Gottlieb Haase was appointed court printer, shortly afterwards he died.

After the death of their father, his sons Ludwig Haase (* 1801) and Andreas Haase (* 1804) continued the flourishing company. From 1831 the brothers Gottlieb Haase jun. (* 1809) and Rudolph Haase (* 1811) join the business; the company was called Gottlieb Haase Sons . The younger Gottlieb Haase had also learned letterpress printing; Rudolph, however, had Jura studied. In 1835 Gottlieb Haase Söhne bought the printing works founded by Johann Ferdinand von Schönfeld in Prague's Annenhof. On March 5, 1837, the company bought a homestead with a board saw, mill and pub in Wran for 15,000 guilders from the Königsaal rulers and set up a paper mill there, which began operations in 1840.

In 1843 Gottlieb Haase Sons published the world's first book printed entirely in gold, namely “The Four Books of the Imitation of Christ” by Thomas von Kempen , which was produced in a splendid edition of only 15 copies. The first copy was dedicated to His Majesty Ernst August , King of Hanover , in whose royal library the copy with silver binding and royal coat of arms was located. Andreas Haase was raised to the nobility in 1854 by Emperor Franz Joseph with the title Haase von Wranau . The Gottlieb Haase Söhne company was one of the most successful book printing companies in Austria. It consisted of five subdivisions and employed 700 workers around 1860. On January 1, 1872, the company was transformed into the Bohemia joint stock company.
