Gottschalk from Minden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottschalk († December 15, 1112 ) was Bishop of Minden from 1097 to 1112 .

Gottschalk was one of the Minden bishops who had to rule against an opposing bishop . The dispute over the succession of Bishop Egilbert (also called "Mindener Bischofsschisma") is probably due to the investiture dispute between the emperor and the pope. The time of the opposing bishops in Minden only ended in 1120 with the consecration of Sigward . Gottschalk's opposing bishop was Widelo von Minden , who was appointed bishop around the same time as him in 1097. Gottschalk was the bishop of the Gregorians . From the papal point of view, Gottschalk was the only legitimate successor to the legitimate Bishop Ulrich , who died in 1097. Gottschalk was initially unable to take possession of the Minden monastery . Widelo had to give up in 1105 and from then on Gottschalk ruled the diocese and bishopric until his death in 1112 . After his death, Widelo became a widely accepted successor to Gottschalk.
