Ulrich von Minden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulrich (also Udalricus or Odalricus ) († 1097 ) was from 1089 to 1097 confirmed bishop of Minden by the Pope .

Ulrich was wealthy in Holtorpe ( Holtorf ?) In the county of Welpe . After Reinward (bishop from 1080), Ulrich was the second of the Minden bishops to rule against an opposing bishop . The dispute over the "true" bishop (also known as the "Minden Bishop's Schism") is probably due to the investiture dispute between the emperor and the pope. The time of the opposing bishops in Minden only ended in 1120 with the consecration of Sigward . When Reinward, appointed by the Pope, died in 1089, the imperial favored counter-bishop Volkmar von Minden took over the government in the monastery and led it until his murder in 1094 or 1096. When Ulrich was appointed bishop in 1089 and successor to Bishop Reinward, who was legitimate from the papal point of view so it was most likely because of the will or approval of the Pope. It is recorded, however, that Volkmar kept the government over the diocese until his murder. Ulrich managed to take power in Minden after Volkmar's murder. He ruled in Minden from 1096 (possibly also from 1094) until his death in 1097. He presumably died on December 8th ( Mary's conception ) in 1097. The date of death December 8, 1096 is only occasionally given, which may be due to the "year zero problem" .
