Volkmar von Minden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Volkmar (also Folkmar or Volmarusus ) († June 24, 1094 , 1095 or August 29, 1096 ) was (counter) bishop of Minden from 1080, effectively from 1089 until his death .

Volkmar was the first of a number of Minden counter-bishops who tried to rule against the bishop appointed by the Pope according to canon law. The dispute over the succession of Bishop Egilbert (also called "Mindener Bischofsschisma") is probably due to the investiture dispute between the emperor and the pope. The time of the opposing bishops in Minden only ended in 1120 with the consecration of Sigward . The Pope's candidate was Reinward . Volkmar was appointed bishop by the emperor at the same time as Reinwards was appointed in 1080. Reinward was able to maintain the papal claims in Minden until his death in 1089, so that Volkmar only took possession of the Minden monastery after Reinward's death in 1089 .

It is said that Volkmar was a canon in Hildesheim before his time as Bishop of Minden . As a bishop he is said to have been of an ungodly character. Volkmar was murdered on Johannes-Baptist-Nacht 1094, i.e. June 24th 1094, or 1095 or not until August 29th 1096 (cf. the day of the beheading of John ). Volkmar was the only bishop of Minden who was murdered. At most, the fates of Wulfhar and Theodoric are distantly comparable, since both were killed on the battlefield. It is said that Volkmar was not buried in the Minden Cathedral with honor of a bishop , but - as one source says - was buried under the Schwibbogen .
