Reinward of Minden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reinward (also Reimundus , Reinhard or Reinwardus ) († February 25 or June 28, 1089 ) was Bishop of Minden from 1080 to 1089 .

Reinward, who was provost of the cathedral before his time as bishop , was the first in the line of Minden bishops to rule against an opposing bishop . The dispute over the succession of Bishop Egilbert (also called "Mindener Bischofsschisma") is probably due to the investiture dispute between the emperor and the pope. The time of the opposing bishops in Minden only ended in 1120 with the consecration of Sigward . Reinward was the Pope's candidate. His appointment was conveyed by the papal legate Otto (meaning is probably Otto von Ostia ). Bishop Hartwig von Spanheim inaugurated Reinward and both cathedral chapters and the state estates elected or recognized Reinward. The opposing bishop Volkmar was appointed bishop by the emperor at the same time. Reinward relied on the support of the anti-king Hermann von Salm to secure his power over the diocese . When his reign ended in 1088, Reinward was initially expelled from Minden, but returned shortly afterwards and was able to maintain the papal claims in Minden until his death in 1089, so that Volkmar only took possession of the Minden monastery after Reinward's death .

There are different statements about the exact date of his death. He probably died at the end of his term of office on February 25, 1089. At least one source also names Petri Eve 1089, i.e. June 28, 1089, as the date of death.
