Sigward von Minden (* 11th century ; † April 28, 1140 ) was Bishop of Minden from 1120 to 1140 .

Life

Sigwards origin is not certain. The name of the mother Eveza is well known. This bequeathed properties in Barksen near Bückeburg to the Minden cathedral chapter . Sigward was related to Count Adolf I von Schaumburg . He was a member of the Hildesheim and Minden cathedral chapters and was last provost there .

Because there is no evidence of when his predecessor died, the beginning of Sigwards' term of office cannot be dated either. He is named as bishop from 1120 onwards. A document from him from 1121 states that he was elected by the cathedral chapter. It was consecrated in Rome in 1124 .

Sigward increased the ownership of the bishopric by handing over his inheritance to him on the western bank of the river Leine in pago Mersteme . The monastery property was increased further in its time when a noble woman named Gerburga and her son Dietmar gave their property in Geinhusen, Langrothere and Hanhurst - also located in pago Mersteme - to the diocese. For this they received pension payments. They got some goods back as fiefs. Other people also bequeathed possessions to the monastery.

To Emperor Lothar III. Sigward was in a close relationship. About 1126 he was present at the deliberations on the Würzburg bishops' dispute. He was present as a witness at numerous acts of rule. He consecrated the collegiate church of the Elten Abbey in 1129 in the presence of the future emperor . In the same year he was at the Whitsun festival at the court in Quedlinburg . Together with Berthold von Hildesheim he consecrated the collegiate church of St. Servatius in the presence of the emperor . Sigward was also present on the court day at Easter 1134 in Halberstadt .

The proximity to Konrad III was significantly less . It is only attested once at the royal court. This was in January 1139 in Goslar . In this way he differed significantly from the other Westphalian bishops who had participated in the Cologne Court Conference of 1138 and the Bamberg Court Conference in the same year.

Sigward expanded the Minden Cathedral with a new choir building with an inner walkway system based on the Rhenish model and a polygonal apse. Between 1129 and 1134 he had the church in Idensen built as his own church and grave , which is now called the Sigward Church and is a nationally important architectural and art monument. A signposted hiking trail named after the bishop, the Sigwardsweg , leads from Minden to Idensen.
