Gourock Ropeworks

The Gourock Ropeworks are a former rope factory in the Scottish city of Port Glasgow in Inverclyde . In 1988 the company was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The company was founded in 1797. It produced ropes for the numerous shipyards along the Firth of Clyde . The company's headquarters were later relocated to the building of a former sugar factory in Port Glasgow, which at that time was an important location for shipbuilding. The Lithgows company alone employed around 8,000 workers and was later the world's largest privately owned shipyard.

building

The building is located in the center of Port Glasgow opposite the port facilities directly on the A8 . It was built in 1866 as a production building for a sugar refinery. In the 19th century, the neighboring Greenock was one of the British centers for sugar production , which the former sugar store still bears witness to today . The Gourock Ropeworks later moved into the building, whose headquarters had previously been in the immediate vicinity, and integrated parts of their facilities, so that the oldest parts of the building date from the late 18th century. After the company was closed, the building was converted into living space. The total cost of this operation was around £ 3 million. The renovation measures were praised as exemplary at an architecture award ceremony.

The seven-story building has an L-shaped floor plan. The masonry consists of red sandstone, which is set off with yellow sandstone at openings and building edges. Windows are arranged on eight vertical axes along the north-facing front. With the exception of the upper and basement floors, where round windows are built in, they end with a very flat segment arch. The building closes with flat, slate-covered hip roofs .
