Sr. Marija of Jesus crucified 1892–1966

Marija Petković (born December 10, 1892 in Blato on the island of Korčula , Croatia ; † July 9, 1966 in Rome ), religious name Marija of the Crucified Jesus , was a religious sister and founder of the Congregation of the Daughters of Mercy of St. Francis . She was beatified on June 6, 2003 in Dubrovnik by Pope John Paul II .

Live and act

Marija Petković was the sixth of eleven children of the married couple Antun Kovac Pekovic and Maria geb. Marinovic. Antun was a wealthy man; his generosity towards the poor was an example for his children. She attended the elementary school in her hometown and from 1904 the school of the "Servants of Charity" fellow sisters of a religious order that Bishop Josip Marčelić called to his diocese of Dubrovnik .

After receiving First Holy Communion in 1905, Marija wanted to become a nun. She revealed herself to her bishop and took a private vow of chastity, which she renewed in prayer every day. She performed charity through the Daughters of Mary Association. One group looked after or visited the sick, another group prepared children for First Communion. 1909-1919 she was head of the association with around 300 members. When her father died in 1911, she took on responsibility for the family and supported her mother in bringing up her siblings. The time of the First World War required their charitable work. Under the direction of Bishop Marčelić, she was in charge of the “Society of Catholic Mothers” from 1915, and in 1917 she took over the leadership of the Third Order of the Franciscans and headed the “soup kitchen” that the bishop had set up. With the request to the bishop in her home town of Blato on Korcula and to be allowed to continue to care for the poor, she and her friend Marija Telenta joined the order of the “Servants of Charity”. A little later, however, the superior died and the other sisters had to leave the country for political reasons and return to Italy.

Sr. Marija of the crucified Jesus gathered several young women around her and Bishop Josip Marčelić had to redeem the given word. On the feast of the Annunciation on March 25, 1919, the "Congregation of the Daughters of Mercy of St. Francis" was founded. It became a community of diocesan law that was officially recognized in 1928. In addition to helping the poor and the sick, the young girls from the area were to be taught and trained. The sisters founded kindergartens, day care centers, housekeeping and sewing classes.

In 1936 the Congregation of the Daughters of Mercy established branches in Argentina and from 1940 to 1952 in several countries in Latin America. The General Congregation moved its headquarters to Rome , where the founder of the order suffered a stroke in 1954 and was permanently paralyzed.

Exhausted from serving God and the poor for whom she did everything, she died on July 9, 1966 and was buried in the Roman cemetery of Campo Verano . In 1969 the corpse was transferred to the house chapel of the General Congregation and in 1998 its final resting place was found in the crypt of the monastery church in Blato.

On August 26, 1988, the Peruvian submarine BAP Pacocha (SS-48) was rammed by the Japanese fishing trawler Kiowa Maru shortly before entering the port of Callao and sank. 20 sailors threatened to drown because the hatch could not be closed. Roger Cotrina, a 42-year-old lieutenant, said he prayed to Marija Petković, whom the Sisters of the "Daughters of Mercy" told him about. The hatch closed and the lieutenant was convinced that she was mediating in his rescue and in the rescue of other sailors in the submarine. After years of research by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints , this was recognized as a miracle. During his 3rd pastoral visit to Croatia she beatified Pope John Paul II on June 6, 2003 in Dubrovnik; she was the first blessed in Croatia.
