Saint Petersburg Governorate
The Saint Petersburg Governorate existed from 1708 to 1927. It was a governorate of Tsarist Russia , the Russian Empire and the Russian SFSR . It covered an area of 53.768 km², the administrative seat was Saint Petersburg .

location
The governorate bordered the Gulf of Finland and Lake Peipus to the west, Lake Ladoga to the north and the Grand Duchy of Finland ( Wyborg Governorate ) to the north-west . Bordering Russian governorates were (clockwise from the north): Olonez , Novgorod , Pskov and Estonia . Compared to today 's Leningrad Oblast , it extended further to the south and less to the east.

According to the first all-Russian census in 1897, the governorate had 2,112,033 inhabitants. Most of them were Russians (1,729,564), other groups were Finns (130,413), Estonians (64,116), German (63,457), Poland (45,009), Jews (16,061) izhorians (13,721) and Latvians (10,251)
education
The governorate belonged to the educational district of Saint Petersburg from 1803 .
