Risorgimento
During the Italian War of Independence of 1848 , Governolo was the scene of battles between Austrians and Italians twice.
The first battle took place in the early morning of April 24, 1848. 1200 Austrians approaching from Mantua were forced to retreat by Bersaglieri and volunteers.
On July 18, there was another skirmish. During a Piedmontese operation against Mantua, 1500 Austrians from Governolo threatened the left wing of the Piedmontese, which therefore decided to launch an attack on Governolo. A first attack forced the Austrians to retreat after fierce fighting. They took up a square defensive position near the Mincio , but were encircled and beaten by Piedmontese Bersaglieri who had bypassed them beforehand.
