The old Thuringian cemetery of Deersheim from the Merovingian period near Halberstadt in Saxony-Anhalt was discovered in 1964 and excavated from 1964 to 1971.

Find description

The old Thuringian cemetery of Deersheim in the northern Harz foreland from the Merovingian period , dating to the early 6th century, was discovered in 1964 following a sand pit operation and excavated until 1971. It includes 42 burials, both body and cremation graves. There are only 15 adults among the graves, a high percentage. The cemetery also contains eight horse burials. Johannes Schneider published the found material with extensive documentation. The graves begin around 500 AD and end in the second half of the 6th century.

Grave finds from the Merovingian era from Deersheim - a tumbler, a bronze bead-rim basin, a silver spoon and a gold case - were shown in the special exhibition “Beauty, Power and Death” from December 11, 2001 to April 28, 2002 in the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle / Saale .
