The old Thuringian grave field of Schönebeck from the Merovingian era on the Elbe in Saxony-Anhalt with 20 burials and several dog and horse graves was discovered and excavated after 1953 by the director of the Salzland Museum Schönebeck, Wolfgang Wanckel. The burial object of a goldsmith (fine blacksmith's tool) underneath is one of the rarest and most valuable finds in the museum.

The old Thuringian grave field of Schönebeck on the middle Elbe from the Merovingian period , dated to the early 6th century, was discovered and excavated after 1953 by the director of the district museum Schönebeck (today Salzlandmuseum ), Wolfgang Wanckel, "on Barbyer Straße" in Schönebeck. More than 20 graves were uncovered, including three animal burials (a double horse burial, a horse / dog burial, a horse burial) and 20 human burials (six male graves, eight female graves, six undefined graves).

Goldsmith's grave

The trench ensemble of the Germanic goldsmith consists of a clay pot and various iron tools: a hammer, a flat file, pliers, an anvil insert and a broad ax. The entire grave ensemble is dated around 530. The materials used are clay and iron.

The valuable grave find from the Merovingian era from Schönebeck - the fine forging tool of an old Thuringian goldsmith - is shown in the permanent exhibition "Life Streams - Inland Shipping on the Elbe, Saale and Bode" of the Salzland Museum Schönebeck.
