Green-eyes (Chlorophthalmidae) are a small family of deep-sea fish consisting of 21 species in two genera . They live in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. It is named after its large, tall, green iridescent eyes. The name Chlorophthalmidae is made up of chloros (Greek "green") and ophthalmos (Greek "eye").
Some species are caught and processed into fishmeal or sold as fresh fish.
features
Green eyes are small, slender fish. The largest species, Chlorophthalmus agassizi , is 40 centimeters long, most of the other species are between 15 and 30 centimeters long. Green eyes are yellowish to blackish brown. Its mouth is shovel-shaped, and part of the upper jaw is an elongated supramaxillary . A pseudobranch and pyloric tubes are present. The rear end of the mouth does not extend over the orbit . The number of Branchiostegal rays is eight, those of the eddies 38 to 50.
Fin formula : dorsal 9–13, anal 7–11, pectoral 15–19.
Way of life
Green eyes are deep sea fish that live in the zone from 50 to 1000 meters deep. They live on the continental slopes and may live in schools. Green-eyes feed on benthic invertebrates and pelagic crustaceans.
Reproduction
Like many members of the lizardfish relatives (Aulopiformes), green eyes are hermaphrodites . It is believed that this is an advantage in the deep sea as it increases the likelihood that a partner will be found in the expanses of the deep sea. Young and larval green eyes are pelagic and live in higher water layers than the adult fish.
Green-eyes are eaten by hake .
