Green alternative Freiburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Green Alternative Freiburg (GAF) is a left-wing alternative, socially and ecologically oriented voters' association in Freiburg im Breisgau , which split off from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in 2008 .

Emergence

In June 2008, the local councilors Monika Stein and Coinneach McCabe announced that they were leaving the parliamentary group Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen- Junge Freiburg and found a green opposition . They justified their step with "no longer existing mutual respect" between them and the Freiburg mayor Dieter Salomon and his supporters in the alliance green parliamentary group, which ironed off nonconforming opinions with "irrelevant arguments, simply to show loyalty to the mayor. Both of them no longer wanted to support decisions made solely for reasons of power politics. Only as independent municipal councilors could they “protect fundamental rights and demand social and ecological policies”. Stein and McCabe criticized in particular the police action and the inability to compromise towards left-wing alternative scene and social fringe groups, the planned and failed city building sale , blanket cuts in the cultural sector and the alcohol ban in the Freiburg bar district "Bermuda Triangle", which was found to be illegal by the Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg in July 2009 as an expression of a new policy of repression.

Representation in the local council until the local elections in June 2009

The subsequent formation of a “ counting community ” in the Freiburg municipal council with the parliamentary group of the Independent Lists (UL) failed for legal reasons. Both city councils retained their seats on the municipal council committees.

Program for the municipal council election 2009

The GAF election program for the Freiburg municipal council election in June 2009 was geared towards

  • local and global environmental protection
  • social economic policy with the primacy of politics over economy, rejecting neoliberalism
  • Strengthening civil rights and protecting fundamental rights; Video surveillance restriction
  • Creating and maintaining accessible and affordable educational opportunities
  • Protection of the urban housing stock: Another attempt to sell the Freiburg housing association Stadtbau is expressly rejected.

Representation in the local council since the local elections in June 2009

Stein and McCabe were confirmed as councilors in the local council election in June 2009 with an election result of 3.9 percent.

Although additional funds and the possibility of filling offices in the local council are dependent on the parliamentary group status, and coalition offers were made to the GAF by various groups in the town hall, the general meeting on July 23, 2009 unanimously decided that Stein and McCabe, although "a close and trusting Cooperation "with Independent Women (UF), Kulturliste Freiburg (KULT), Linke Liste / Solidarity City (LisST) and Young Freiburg, but should not enter into a group to maintain independence.

Representation in the local council since the local elections in June 2014

In the 2014 local elections , the Green Alternative Freiburg lost 0.7 percentage points and one seat. Together with Young Freiburg (2 won mandates) and The Party (1 won mandate) it joined the JPG group.

criticism

The association gained national media attention in 2012 through internal disputes about its board spokeswoman Tina Gröbmayr, who also assisted in the defense of a neo-Nazi as part of her work as a lawyer. The disputes led to the resignation and the election of the new board.
