The Green Bridge Neesen is a railway bridge that in the district Neesen the East Westphalian town of Porta Westfalica the Weser spans and on the branch line of the railway line Porta Westfalica-Häverstädt leads.

history

The bridge was built in 1938 as a tied arch bridge and provided with a green corrosion protection from which it got its name. The Porta Westfalica – Häverstädt railway line , which was built to transport iron ore from the mine in Häverstädt , runs over the bridge that shapes the landscape . During the Second World War, the bridge was destroyed by blowing up the eastern pillar. The advancing US soldiers built the crossing over the Weser nearby. The bridge was repaired after the war. After the iron ore mine was closed in 1963, freight traffic fell sharply, and until 1967 the bridge was still used to transport sand-lime bricks over the Weser with a connection to the network of the German Federal Railroad . After that, the line served as a test track for the German Federal Railroad and the Federal Railroad Central Office in Minden. In 1976 the line was finally closed.

The bridge lies parallel to the Weser and Wiehen Mountains and connects the districts of Neesen and Barkhausen .

Both the actual bridge and the flood bridges are made of metal. The Weser Bridge is designed as a riveted tied arch bridge.

Trivia

In the mid-1950s, the approximately four-kilometer branch line that leads over the Green Bridge Neesen was used twice to park a special train overnight. On the one hand, King Paul of Greece spent one night here, on the other hand, on the night of February 13, 1955, Chancellor Adenauer . Between 10:53 p.m. and 8:05 a.m. the following day, the special train, secured by ten police officers, was parked about 20 meters from the Häverstädt train station, before continuing in the direction of Hamm.

Abort attempt 2013

The building was allegedly sold to a private person by the railway recycling company at the end of 2013. The demolition work began in December 2013. There was concern among the population that it would only be about the metal and that the masonry of the pillars would remain. The city of Porta Westfalica then announced on January 16, 2014 that further demolition may only take place with a demolition permit from the city of Porta Westfalica and has stopped the demolition by the private company for the time being. The statics of the remaining components were then checked by Deutsche Bahn.
