The green non-sulfur bacteria or Chloroflexi form a phylogenetically independent group among the bacteria . Chloroflexi denotes both the phylum and one of the classes within the phylum. They are to be distinguished from the green sulfur bacteria . The chloroflexi are gram-negative and mostly filamentous . All known representatives are thermophilic .
Chloroflexus has the ability to photosynthesize . The light-absorbing pigments give the bacteria their greenish color. The photosynthetic apparatus has an unusual structure. On the one hand, it has characteristics that are typical of green sulfur bacteria , such as chlorosomes and bacteriochlorophyll c, but on the other hand also bacteriochlorophyll a, which is otherwise found in purple bacteria . Chloroflexus is metabolically diverse: it can grow anoxygenically photoautotrophically , but also photoheterotrophically (like non-sulfur purple bacteria ) and chemoorganotrophically if there is a lack of light . From a phylogenetic point of view, chloroflexus is a very old organism and has a unique way of carbon assimilation ( hydroxypropionate cycle ).
Thermomicrobium lives chemotrophically and grows best at temperatures around 75 ° C. The bacterium is interesting because of its unusual cell membrane whose lipids , unlike other bacteria and archaea, do not contain glycerine and are neither esterified nor etherified.
Green non-sulfur bacteria can be found in hot springs with neutral to high pH values, but also in marine mats.
