The green pitcher plant ( Sarracenia oreophila ) is a species from the pitcher plant family.

description

The plant bears a certain resemblance to Sarracenia flava , but remains smaller. The hoses are 20 to 70 cm high and have a yellow-green color. There is a cover over the hose inlet, which is veined in fine red to red-violet when the sun is bright. The first tubes are often completely formed when the flower appears. Hose production stops as early as summer - the plant slowly begins to form phyllodes, which are present until spring. The reason for the phyllode formation is the dry summers at the natural site. The phyllodes are about 5 to 20 cm long and the more numerous the darker the location. The rhizome reaches a thickness of 1 to 1.5 cm.

The flowers (5 to 8.5 cm in diameter) are yellow-green to light yellow in color. They sit on a 40 to 70 cm high flower stem. Flowering time is May to early June.

Distribution, endangerment and status

distribution

This now very rare plant can only be found in northeast Alabama and North Carolina . It is considered critically endangered and has therefore been listed in CITES , Appendix I, since 1981 .

Botanical history

The green pitcher plant was discovered in 1875 by Hugh M. Neisler . Due to the similarity with the yellow pitcher plant ( Sarracenia flava ), the plant was classified by TJ Kearney in 1900 as Sarracenia flava var. Oreophila , but not validly described, therefore the taxon is a nomen nudum . In 1933 Edgar Theodore Wherry noticed the differences on the basis of cultivated plants and first described the taxon as a separate species.
