history
Grünenfurt was originally called "Grönenwerd", which means green elevation in swampy terrain. In 1455 it was first mentioned in a document of this name in a sales deed from the Eisenburg lordship . After the last lords of Eisenburg died in 1455, the property fell to Memmingen patrician families. The population became Protestant with the Reformation. However, the owners of Grünenfurt were tolerant. So they agreed with the Carthusian monastery of Buxheim that Catholic farmers from Amendingen, which belonged ecclesiastically to the Carthusian monastery, could order Grünenfurter Grund without having to become Protestant. A small country castle was built there during the Renaissance period . With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss the hamlet came to Amendingen. Together with this, Grünenfurt was incorporated into the city of Memmingen in 1972 as part of the municipal reform. Today the hamlet consists of the inhabited castle and several inhabited former servants' houses.
