The green moth ( Chloroclystis v-ata ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the flyers (Geometridae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 14 to 19 millimeters. The wings have a green basic color and on the forewings there is a v-shaped black drawing that is part of a transverse line. The hind wings are gray to white and darker on the outside. The resting posture is also characteristic, in which the wings, like butterflies, either stand halfway up or are placed closed over the body. The thorax is also green and has a black drawing on top. The green base color fades pretty quickly after the butterfly hatches.

The caterpillars are only about 16 millimeters long and are colored differently, with basic colors such as green, gray, brown or reddish brown. There are black, triangular drawings on the back, but they can also be missing. The moth caterpillar resembles those of other species, making it difficult to determine with certainty.

Flight time

The species forms two generations per year, some of which overlap. The moths fly from April to June and from July to August at dusk and in the dark. Small numbers of them can be observed regularly at light sources. In unfavorable climatic conditions such as in the north of England and Scotland , only one generation appears.

distribution

The moth is widespread from Europe to Asia to Japan . The moths are found in damp places, in warm areas and in gardens.

Way of life

The caterpillar forage plants include dost ( Origanum vulgare ), clematis ( Clematis spec.), Elderberry ( Sambucus spec.) And blackberry ( Rubus spec.), Whereby the animals mainly feed on the flowers. The second generation pupae overwinter in the ground.
