Grand Forks is a place at the confluence of the Granby River with the Kettle River in Boundary Country in British Columbia in Canada . The community is located directly on the border with the United States of America in the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary .

Some Duchoborzen live in Grand Forks , who moved here from Saskatchewan from around 1909.

history

The first settlement of Europeans was founded around 1880. The settlers were mainly farmers. Another development started around 1900 when a smelter was founded here, which at times employed up to 400 people. However, it only flourished for a short time, as copper prices fell after the First World War and the smelter closed again.

The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on April 14, 1897 ( incorporated as City ).

Demographics

The census in 2011 showed a population of 3,985 inhabitants for the small town. The city's population has decreased by 1.3% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the entire province of British Columbia increased by 7.0%.

economy

In Grand Forks there is not only logging, but also agriculture, especially fruit and vegetable growing. The paper processing industry is also an important employer. The median wage for workers in 2006 was C $ 19,881 compared to C $ 24,867 in the province of British Columbia.

Grand Forks is near a copper mine that closed in 1935.

traffic

The Crowsnest Highway ( Highway 3 ) runs through the city in an east-west direction .

The local airport is about 2 kilometers southeast of the city ( IATA airport code : ZGF, ICAO code : CZGF, Transport Canada Identifier: -). The airfield only has an asphalt runway 1314 meters long.
