On February 1, 1935, the "Symphonic Orchestra" was increased to 60 people and renamed the Grand Orchester Symphonique de l'INR / Groot Symfonie-Orkest van het NIR. Franz André became the new chief conductor, and the orchestra quickly made a name for itself with numerous appearances at the Brussels World's Fair . In the following year the number of members increased to 84. After the completion of the Funkhaus on Place Flagey / Flageyplein in Ixelles / Elsene in 1938, the orchestra in Studio 4 of the Funkhaus, which quickly became famous for its excellent acoustics, got a permanent fix Rehearsal and performance location. On April 19, 1939, the orchestra gave the belated premiere of Stravinsky's cantata Le Roi des étoiles ; Sergei Prokofjew and Béla Bartók had already been guests with the orchestra in 1936 . During the German occupation (1940-1944), in which the INR / NIR was renamed "Sender Brussels", the orchestra remained active to a limited extent. In 1945 the orchestra was reactivated with its full cast of 84 members. In 1948 André Sternfeld was employed as the second conductor, he inherited Franz André after his retirement in 1958.

In the 1950s in particular, the orchestra was able to hire renowned guest conductors, including Leonard Bernstein , Pierre Boulez , Benjamin Britten , Darius Milhaud and Paul Sacher . In the course of the reorganization of Belgian broadcasting in 1960, the INR / NIR was dissolved and the orchestra was subordinated to the newly founded "Institut des services communs / Instituut voor Gemeenschappelijke Diensten" (ISC / IGD). In 1970 André Sternfeld retired, the orchestra initially remained without a permanent conductor for some time until Irwin Hoffman took over the direction of the orchestra in 1973. In 1977 the structure of the joint orchestra, which was sponsored by the ISC / IGD, broke up and the two successor companies of the INR / NIR, the Dutch-speaking BRT and the French-speaking RTB, were forced to set up their own orchestras.
