Granitzhaus at the Granitz hunting lodge near Binz on Rügen

The Granitzhaus on the island of Rügen is a former forest and inn from 1901, which today houses the information center for the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve . It stands directly opposite the Granitz hunting lodge near Binz .

In 1726 the then Prince zu Putbus Moritz Ulrich I had a hunting lodge built on the open space in front of today's Granitzhaus. This consisted of a main house and two side pavilions. Four consecrated deer heads on the front of the main house indicated the purpose of the building: hunting . The princely hunting party took quarters in the main house during the hunting season.

Moritz Ulrich I had an octagonal tower built on the Fürstenberg opposite the house (today the Granitz Hunting Lodge is located there ), from which a wide view over the Granitz was possible. Probably because of the pyramid-like roof, the house was also called "Temple" and the mountain from then on was called "Temple Mount". The temple was demolished around 1860 because it was dilapidated; Prince Wilhelm Malte I zu Putbus had the hunting lodge built in its place from 1836 to 1846.

After completion of the castle, the old Granitzhaus became a forester's apartment. In 1853 the house was torn down and a forest and inn was built, the "Gasthaus Granitz". However, the forestry department was moved from the house to Blieschow as early as 1891 and the restaurant and boarding house in the inn could be expanded. For this purpose it was completely refurbished in 1901.

From 1952 the house housed the station of the "Young Tourists", a working group of the pioneer organization of the GDR . From 1990 to 1996 the house served as a country school home.

The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has owned the house since 1998 and had it completely renovated from 2003 to 2004.

Since April 8, 2004, the information center of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve has been housed in the Granitzhaus.
