Grant Furlong
Robert Grant Furlong (born January 4, 1886 in Roscoe , Washington County , Pennsylvania , † March 19, 1973 in Donora , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1945 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Grant Furlong attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1904 the Pennsylvania State Teachers College in California . In 1904 and 1905 he taught himself as a teacher. After a subsequent medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and his license as a doctor in 1909, he began to work in Donora in 1910 in this profession. He exercised this with interruptions during his participation in the war and as a congressman until 1968. During World War I he was a first lieutenant in an ambulance unit in the United States Army . After the war, in addition to his work as a doctor, he also pursued a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1922 and 1926 and again in 1941 and 1942 he was mayor of Donora. There he also acted as a postman between 1933 and 1938.
In the 1942 congressional election , Furlong was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 25th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Charles I. Faddis on January 3, 1943 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1944, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1945 . This was shaped by the events of the Second World War .
After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Grant Furlong continued to practice as a doctor in Donora. He was also a sheriff in Washington County between 1945 and 1965 . He died on March 19, 1973 in Donora.
