Grateful Dead is a double live album by the band Grateful Dead .

history

In contrast to the first live album Live / Dead , this album contains newer, self-written material and covers by other artists.

David Hassinger, who most recently co-produced the album Anthem of the Sun for the band , before he left the band in the dispute, acted as producer again . It was also the first album without Mickey Hart , who left the band after his father and then manager of the band embezzled $ 155,000 . In return, Merl Saunders was won as a guest musician at some concerts.

Songs from seven different concerts given by the band in the spring of 1971 were selected for the album.

The classic Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry was in the Winterland Arena on March 24 San Francisco added.

" Big Railroad Blues " and the medley of " Not Fade Away " and " Goin 'Down the Road Feeling Bad " were selected from a concert in Manhattan Center, New York City on April 5th.

In the same place on April 6th, the songs “ Playing in the Band ”, “ Oh Boy! "And" I'm a Hog for You ".

The Grateful Dead performed nightly over the course of several days at the Fillmore East in New York City. On April 26th the band played the songs " Mama Tried ", " Big Boss Man " and " Wharf Rat ", " Bertha " and " Me & Bobby McGee " were recorded on April 27th and " The Other One " on April 28th. April. The last song " Me & My Uncle " was chosen from the Fillmore East concert on April 29th.

Playing in the Band ” was particularly well received by the radio stations and was one of the most played songs in their live repertoire .

In 2001 a revised version of the 11 songs and three more were released by Rhino Records for the box set The Golden Road (1965-1973) , which were then also released in 2003 as a single CD and audio DVD.

Grateful Dead stayed true to the style of the last two albums by largely choosing songs that came from folk-rock , blues -rock and rock 'n' roll .

Trivia

The album is also known under the names " Skull & Roses " and " Skullfuck "; " Skull & Roses " due to the drawings on the cover and " Skullfuck " was intended by the band as the actual album title, but this was rejected by Warner Bros. Records.

Often the album is confused with the debut album The Grateful Dead (1967) due to the (almost) identical names. The medley of “ Not Fade Away ” and “ Goin 'Down the Road Feeling Bad ” was also well received by radio stations and became a fan favorite at concerts.

The song " Wharf Rat " was adopted by a fan group as the official name in the 1980s. The group The Wharf Rat Group of Alcoholics Anonymous walked out of the fan group Deadheads out and stands for a life without alcohol and other drugs .

The cover was based on a drawing in the Persian book of poems " Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam ".

successes

The album reached number 25 on the Billboard charts .
